Record whether the cockroach signs are around an appliance or inside a food or electrical compartment. UC IPM identifies appliance/motor areas as inspection locations, but one sighting does not establish the full harbourage. Ask about kitchen pest assessment and confirm appliance inspection or servicing separately.
Around the appliance or inside it?
Finding cockroaches near a fridge, microwave or oven is a common concern in Singapore kitchens. The first question is whether they are around the appliance (on the floor, behind it, under the kickplate) or inside its food or electrical compartments. These are different situations with different next steps.
UC IPM notes that cockroach egg cases can be found glued to undersides of furniture and around refrigerator and appliance motors. A sighting near a motor housing or surrounding gap does not establish that an appliance is faulty or that insects are inside its food compartment.
What to record
- Location: on the appliance exterior, under the kickplate, behind the unit, on the wall, or actually inside the food compartment or control panel.
- What you found: live cockroaches, egg cases, droppings, or a combination. Take a photograph if possible.
- Timing: when you first noticed them and whether activity is repeated.
- Other areas: whether the same signs appear elsewhere in the kitchen, at the rubbish chute, drain or bin area.
Pest assessment and appliance servicing are different tasks
A pest professional assesses cockroach harbourage in the kitchen, including areas around and behind appliances, and applies targeted treatment to those areas. The US EPA advises that pesticides should generally only be applied to targeted locations and that product labels state where they may be used. Do not assume that a general pest product is authorised for a particular food-contact or electrical compartment.
For suspected activity inside a food or electrical compartment, contact the manufacturer or an appropriate appliance service provider about inspection and handling. Confirm any pest-treatment scope separately.
Do not spray or heat an appliance as an improvised pest treatment. Confirm the handling instructions and any proposed treatment with the appropriate provider.
Practical steps before the assessment
- Photograph accessible external signs from a safe position. Do not move a heavy appliance, open its casing or reach into electrical parts to gather evidence.
- Tell the assessor about any visible leak or moisture around the appliance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for routine care.
- Store loose food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs, grease and food residue around the kitchen.
- Tell the assessor which products you have already used and where. Do not apply more product to an appliance merely to test whether insects emerge.
What Four Solutions can assess
Four Solutions provides a cockroach assessment and treatment service. Explain exactly where the signs were found and ask what access and treatment the quotation covers. This guide is not an offer to repair or disassemble an appliance. Read the baby cockroach guide for more on kitchen egg cases and the main cockroach guide for the broader picture.
Frequently asked questions
Can cockroaches live inside a fridge or microwave?
UC IPM includes refrigerator and other appliance motors among locations where cockroach egg cases may be found. That does not establish the source in a particular kitchen. Record the exact external location or suspected compartment and ask for the appropriate assessment.
Should I spray insecticide inside my fridge or microwave?
Do not spray an appliance simply because a cockroach was seen nearby. Product labels specify permitted uses and locations; a general pest product should not be assumed suitable for a food or electrical compartment. Consult the operator and appliance instructions about the specific situation.
Can Four Solutions treat cockroaches inside my appliance?
Ask what access and treatment Four Solutions can include in the quotation. Its published cockroach service is the relevant route for kitchen pest concerns. Appliance inspection, cleaning, repair or disassembly may need the manufacturer or an appliance specialist; do not assume those tasks are included.
Do I need to throw away an appliance with cockroaches?
Sighting cockroaches near an appliance does not mean the appliance must be discarded. The first step is to identify where activity is occurring: around the appliance, behind it, or actually inside its compartments. A pest assessment can clarify the scope before you make that decision.

Record the location, what you found and which appliance is involved, then send the details for a cockroach assessment.
