Quick answer

An air purifier filters airborne particles, including mould spores, from the air you breathe. A dehumidifier reduces room humidity, making conditions less favourable for mould growth. Neither removes existing mould from a surface or fixes the moisture source causing it.

What an air purifier does

An air purifier with a HEPA filter captures airborne particles, including mould spores, from the room air. The EPA guide to air cleaners explains that portable air cleaners can reduce airborne particle levels but cannot address mould growing on surfaces or the moisture conditions that cause it.

An air purifier may help reduce airborne spore exposure in a room while you address the source. It does not remove visible mould, stop mould from growing or reduce humidity.

What a dehumidifier does

A dehumidifier reduces the relative humidity in a room by extracting moisture from the air. The EPA mould and moisture guide recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50% if possible, to reduce conditions that support mould growth.

In Singapore, ambient humidity is often high. A dehumidifier can reduce room humidity, but effectiveness depends on room conditions, door/window state and runtime. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for your specific unit and room. A dehumidifier does not remove existing mould or fix a leak.

What about your aircon's dry mode?

If your air conditioner has a dry or dehumidify mode, it can remove moisture by cooling humid air so water condenses inside the unit and drains away. Operation and controls vary by model. Daikin's technical guide explains the mechanism and notes that dry mode prioritises moisture removal over temperature reduction.

Dry mode can remove moisture from the air, but the capacity, controls and room conditions vary between units and manufacturers. Check your unit's manual for its rated extraction capacity and any humidity target setting. A standalone dehumidifier can typically be placed in a specific room, has a tank or drain for collected water, and may run independently of the cooling system. An aircon in dry mode may cycle on and off based on its sensor readings and the unit's settings. Neither device's specification sheet applies to every room; measure humidity with a meter rather than assuming equivalent dehumidification from either device.

Dry mode operates only in the room where the unit is installed. It does not address other rooms, enclosed spaces such as wardrobes and storerooms, or areas behind furniture where moisture can accumulate. The same room-scope limitation applies to a portable dehumidifier placed in one room. Neither device removes existing mould or fixes a moisture source such as a leak or condensation path.

Air Purifier or Dehumidifier for Mould FAQs

Can an air purifier prevent mould?

An air purifier captures airborne spores but does not reduce humidity or remove surface mould. It may reduce spore exposure but does not prevent mould growth on surfaces.

What humidity level reduces mould risk?

The EPA suggests keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%, if possible. Lower humidity reduces conditions that support mould growth, but room-average RH alone does not prevent mould at cold surfaces or in enclosed spaces.

Should I buy both an air purifier and a dehumidifier?

They serve different purposes. A dehumidifier addresses the moisture condition; an air purifier addresses airborne particles. Whether you need both depends on the situation. Neither replaces addressing the moisture source.

Does aircon dry mode work as well as a dehumidifier for mould?

Both dry mode and a standalone dehumidifier can remove moisture, but capacity, controls and room conditions vary by unit. Check your manual for rated extraction and any humidity target. Measure humidity with a meter rather than assuming equivalent performance from either device. Neither removes existing mould or fixes the moisture source.

Why does mould come back after I clean it?

Cleaning removes visible mould but not the moisture source. If the underlying damp, condensation or leak is not resolved, mould will return. See the recurring mould guide for more detail.
