Start with food, moisture and entry-point checks. Treatment depends on the ants and the property. Four Solutions assesses recurring activity in Singapore homes and businesses and explains suitable treatment, preparation and follow-up in the quotation.
Ant treatment and preparation ยท What affects the treatment cost
If ants keep returning, record the rooms affected, when the trails appear and which products have already been used. This helps the team plan an assessment instead of assuming every trail needs the same treatment. The sections below cover what to observe, what to photograph, how bait and spray fit together, what to ask a provider and how to keep track of activity afterwards.
What to record before you clean or spray
A trail is a route between a food or water source and a nest, so where it runs is worth more than a close-up of one ant. Before you wipe anything, note:
- The route: where you first see ants, where they appear to go, and whether they follow an edge such as a skirting board, cabinet side, window frame, trunking or pipe.
- The timing: morning, night, after cooking, after the floor is mopped or after a plant is watered.
- What they are visiting: a sweet spill, grease, pet food, a bin, a dripping pipe or only a damp spot.
- Where they seem to come from: a gap at a window, a pipe or cable opening, a door threshold, a balcony planter or a shared wall.
- What you have already used: any spray, bait, chalk or powder, and where you put it.
The University of Minnesota Extension says that household observations help with identification and that species differ in where they nest and what they eat. Its examples are American, so treat them as a reason to observe carefully rather than as a description of Singapore ants.
What to photograph
- One wide photo showing the trail in the context of the room, so the assessor can see the surfaces and fittings nearby.
- One closer photo of the trail and the thing it is heading for.
- One sharp, well-lit close-up of the ants themselves, with a coin or ruler beside them for scale.
- A short video of the direction of travel, if you can take one without disturbing the trail.
Size and colour in a phone photo do not establish what the ants are, so describe what you see and let the assessor decide. A photo also cannot show where a hidden nest is.
Entry points and shared building routes
In a flat or condo the visible trail may be only the end of a longer route. Ants can pass along pipes, trunking, shared wall edges and balcony or corridor planters. Record where the trail enters your unit, and whether neighbours or common areas also have activity. Do not open service ducts, ceiling panels or built-in cabinets to look for the nest. Where activity appears in several units, a corridor or a common area, tell the managing agent so access can be arranged through the right party. For a rented home, tell the landlord or agent what you have seen. Whether a nest can be reached at all depends on the site, and a provider should say so after looking rather than promise it in advance.
Food and moisture sources in the kitchen
- Keep sugar, cereal, snacks and pet food in sealed containers, and wipe sticky rings from bottles and jars.
- Empty and rinse bins and recycling regularly, and check the underside of bin lids.
- Check under the sink, around the dishwasher or washing machine and near the fridge drip tray for moisture that does not dry.
- Look at indoor plant saucers and pet water bowls, which can supply water even in a clean kitchen.
Good housekeeping removes what draws ants in, but it does not tell you where the nest is, and a trail may continue while ants still have access to a food source.
Bait, temporary spray and why the order matters
The University of Minnesota Extension explains that bait works because workers carry it back to the nest, and that sprays can interfere with bait. In practice that means:
- If bait is already in place, whether yours or a provider's, do not spray or wipe around it. Leave it undisturbed and tell the next operator exactly where it is.
- A spray that kills the ants on the counter deals with the visible workers for now. It is a temporary measure and may make a bait plan harder, so ask before using it on a trail you want assessed.
- Follow the product label for anything you use. This guide does not give a mixture or a dose, and a home recipe is not a substitute for an assessed plan.
- Judge bait over several days rather than within an hour, because it works over time. If the trail changes, record the new location and timing before adding another product.
Preparing a kitchen for an assessment or treatment
Four Solutions' ant-control page says the technician confirms treatment placement, access and preparation for your kitchen or other affected areas, and that children and pets should stay away from treatment points. Before a visit it is usually safest to do three things: take your photos first, keep food covered, and ask whether the trail and any bait should be left unwiped until the technician has seen them. Do not assume that clearing every cabinet or washing every surface beforehand is helpful, because the right preparation depends on where treatment will go.
Questions to ask an ant-control provider
- What do you think the activity is, and what did you base that on?
- Where would treatment go, and is it bait, spray or both? Why that choice?
- What should I leave untouched, and for how long?
- How should the kitchen, pets, children and food areas be prepared?
- If the nest is outside my unit or in a common area, what can you treat and what is for the managing agent?
- Does the written quote include a further visit, and how do I report activity that returns?
Four Solutions' ant-control service starts with the pattern of activity, entry points and likely harbourage before methods are chosen. Ask the quotation to explain the proposed method and follow-up for your property. For what affects the quote, see the pest control cost guide.
Monitoring after treatment
Keep a simple log for a few weeks: the date, the room, roughly how many ants, where they were, whether they were near bait and what had changed, such as a new spill, a leak or rain. A log that shows ants in one new place is more useful than a general report that they are back. Four Solutions says continuing activity needs a review of the trail, bait uptake, entry routes and food or moisture sources, and does not automatically mean repeating the same treatment. Contact the provider before adding another product of your own.
When to arrange an assessment
It is worth getting help when trails keep returning, appear in several rooms, get into food or appliances, or you cannot find where they come from. See the dedicated ant pest control service for how Four Solutions uses baiting, source reduction and targeted treatment for homes and businesses across Singapore. You can message us on WhatsApp with your photos and notes for an assessment.

Ant control FAQs
Why do ants keep coming back after I spray?
Visible ants may be removed while food, moisture, entry routes or nesting sites remain. Ask for a review of recurring activity.
How do I get rid of ants in my kitchen?
Cover food, clean spills and address leaks. Keep treatment away from food-contact areas and follow the label and operator instructions.
Where do the ants come from?
Ants may enter from outdoors or nest within a building. Photos and trail locations help the assessment but cannot confirm a hidden nest.
Is spraying ants a bad idea?
Do not spray around bait placements. Tell the operator which products were used so the next treatment can be planned.
What photos should I send for an ant problem?
Send a wide photo of the trail in the room, a closer photo of what it is heading for, a sharp close-up of the ants with a coin for scale, and a short video of the direction of travel if you can. A photo cannot show a hidden nest.
Should I follow the trail to find the nest?
Follow it as far as is easy and note where it enters. Do not open walls, ducts or built-in cabinets, and tell the assessor or managing agent what you saw instead.
How much does ant control cost in Singapore?
Four Solutions quotes for the property, affected areas and assessed treatment. Ask whether the written price includes follow-up visits and any inspection charge. See the pest control cost guide before requesting a quote.
What should I ask an ant-control company before booking?
Ask about the affected areas, proposed method, preparation, product precautions, follow-up and any written warranty terms. Tell the team about children, pets, food preparation and previous treatment.
